Close Your Eyes And Imagine...

... you're on the beach, the warm sand between your toes, the sound of crashing waves filling the air. The sun is starting to set, casting a golden glow over everything. You look around at your family, all dressed in outfits that look like you've stepped straight out of a magazine cover. It's seriously a picture-perfect moment! You feel relaxed and ready for a fun photo session at the beach.

Since San Diego has some of California's most gorgeous beaches (and I photograph families at almost all of them), I decided to put together some "beach-specific" styling tips for you.

From choosing the right colors to ensuring everyone feels comfortable and ready to play, we've got you covered. Check out my photo tips below for a successful beach session and let's get ready to make some memories that will last a lifetime!

Opt for Soft, Neutral Tones

When it comes to beach sessions, soft and neutral tones like creams, soft tans, blush pinks, and muted blues complement the natural beauty of the coastline creating a timeless aesthetic for your photos. Pro tip: Mix different tones that are only slightly different. For example: cream tones pair well with ivory and white.

Choose Lightweight, Flowy Fabrics

Choose lightweight, flowy fabrics like chiffon, linen, or cotton that catch the ocean breeze and create beautiful movement in your photos. Pro tip: Flowy dresses and skirts add an ethereal, romantic feel to your beach session, perfect for capturing dreamy seaside moments.

Layer Intentionally

Because the weather at your beach session can change quickly,  it's a good idea to layer up for comfort and versatility. Bring along lightweight layers like cardigans, denim jackets, or shawls to add warmth during cooler beach evenings or to protect against the sea breeze. Pro tip: Opt for breathable, sheer fabrics that won't weigh you down or feel too bulky in the ocean breeze.

Beach-friendly or Barefoot

Ditch the heels and dress shoes and opt for bare feet. You want the photos to feel a little more natural and no one wears shoes to play at the beach. And, who doesn't love photos of their kiddos sand covered feet and toes?  Pro tip: Consider bringing along a pair of cute flip-flops for little ones to protect their feet after the session.
