Motherhood Style: How to Style Your Motherhood Session
Calling all mamas getting ready for their mommy & me photoshoot!
Let me show you what your photos can look like with a bit of intentional styling.
I have been capturing mothers and their sweet little ones on beaches all around the San Diego and Coronado area for a while now. In that time, I have seen so many styles on moms, some are amazing (some are a little less amazing). Over time, I have gathered some of my favorite styling tips for moms, and I am here to share all those details with you today!
Let's start with my favorite tips
Choose Soft, Flowy Fabrics
Flowy dresses and skirts create beautiful movement in photos and add a touch of dreaminess to your session.
Consider Neutral Tones
Soft, neutral tones like creams, taupe, sage greens, and light golden yellow create a timeless look.
Add Texture
Incorporate textured fabrics like lace, chiffon, velvet, or even a chunky knit to add visual interest and depth to your outfits.
Accessorize Thoughtfully
Choose accessories that complement your outfit and add a touch of personality. Delicate jewelry or hats can elevate your look without overpowering it.
Pay Attention to Details
You will want your outfit to be well-fitting and free of wrinkles or stains. Attention to detail goes a long way in creating polished photos.
Consider the Location
Choose outfits that match the vibe of your session location. Think flowy dresses for sessions in a field or at the beach, while more structured outfits may be better suited for urban settings.
Need a Few More Tips?
- Layer to add variety: Layering adds dimension and variety to your image gallery and allows for easy adjustments based on the weather. Consider adding a chunky knit cardigan or denim jacket for versatility.
- Opt for Timeless Styles: When in doubt, choose classic styles and silhouettes that won't look dated in photos years from now.
- Don't Forget the Shoes: Your shoes will definitely be in your photos so choose footwear that complements your outfit, and is appropriate for the location. If you can, opt for comfortable shoes you can easily walk in during the session.
- Consider the Weather: Be prepared for changes in weather. Check the forecast leading up to the session and that way you will know if you need to adjust your outfits or bring some pieces to layer.
- Hair and Makeup: I find that more natural makeup photographs the best, but you should wear your makeup in whatever way makes you feel the best. Same goes for hair, I find down or half up styles work well and add movement, but you should close styles that feel true to you.
- Tanning: If you want to tan for your session, please make sure your tanning sesh is at least 5 days before your photo session. The camera really picks up those orange tones and can make your skin look discolored.
- Plan Ahead: Plan your outfits well in advance of your session to allow time for any changes that need to be made. The night before your session, lay out everyone's outfits to make sure you have every piece you will need and to minimize stress on the day of the session.
